A well known plant-lovers haven in the Rhodes Park area of Lusaka was recently spruced up to include a variety of ‘Homemade in Zambia’ products. The Garden blends a café, fresh farm produce from local suppliers and a well stocked plant nursery for its customers.

The farm shop at the Garden stocks several locals brands of sauces, dips, spices, ice cream, cookies, beverages and fresh vegetable produce. The café offers mostly sandwiches, wraps, bagels and salads with teas, coffee and an assortment of homemade cordial drinks. They also have burger options, which I decided to try. It is served with French fries and a salad.

The salad with its balsamic vinegar dressing was so fresh, I could swear they just picked the ingredients from the nursery. The burger was also pretty fresh and quite tasty, it reminded me of the burger from the Fig Tree, as it tasted so much more organic and meaty, with little seasoning required. The bacon, cheese sauce, sautéed onion rings, lettuce and tomato also ensured that there was a great balance of goey goodness and crunchiness.

The ambiance in the Garden’s sitting area is quite tranquil and quaint for taking a few deep breaths, surrounded by a variety of plants that just reconnect you to nature right within the heart of the city. I would also recommend it as a good space to journal, think or plan with little noise or distractions other than the occasional birds chirping away in the trees above. I look forward to coming back here again and I will not be alone.
