As We Are is the creative expression of Erica Kapaya, a contemporary visual artist who traces her roots in Kabwe, Zambia. Erica embarked on a personal journey of healing, self discovery and self expression through art and she has bloomed into her own right, culminating this phase of her journey into her first solo exhibition, showcased at the Alliance Française, Total Energies Art Gallery in Lusaka.
As We Are endeavors to bridge the gap between individualism and interdependence through art, as Erica has seen the difficulty that comes with creating connections with others and giving a voice to those who feel marginalized. Her artwork is quite vibrant with bright playful hues that meet the depths of dark tones, inciting the observer to introspect how her subjects can be woven in two extremes.
While reflecting on the different pieces in the exhibition, I was reminded about the complexity of how two extremes can coexist in each of us. However, in her pieces that question whether we are truly alone, Erica also expresses the unseen light that exists around us, an invitation of sorts to tap into the vibrant communities that still exist around us, if we only reach out to them.
Join Erica for an artist walkabout tomorrow, Friday 10th May from 15:00 – 18:30, where she will share the inspiration behind her pieces and her artistic process. This is a good chance to connect with the artwork and gain a unique insight into her mind. As We Are exhibition will still be on until 18 May 2024.
